Safeway Kicks Off Private Label Tour
The Safeway Bright Green Clean Team has been touring the U.S. promoting its private label cleaning products. The tour is scheduled to stop in Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles and San Francisco. Team members are giving away samples of Bright Green cleaning products and giving away Bright Green clean-up days at local schools. (Kantar Retail 7/16/10)

Personnel Changes at Safeway:

• Lori Raya, SVP will now oversee Deli/Food Service, Branded Concepts (i.e. Starbucks, Jamba Juice, SRG), Dairy/Refrigerated, and Frozen business units.
• Henry Michon, SVP will lead the Main Meal & Specialty Foods, Meals & Ingredients, and Beverages/Snacks.
• Doug Ratto, SVP will lead Alcohol/Tobacco, General Merchandise, Home Care and Family Care.
• Geoff White, SVP will oversee Produce, Floral and Bakery business units.
• Mike McGinnis, SVP will continue to lead the Meat and Seafood units.
• Jim Lewis, former SVP Main Meal has left Safeway to pursue new opportunities.
• Bob Shelton, former SVP General Merchandise, Home Care and Family Care has announced his retirement from Safeway.
• Hank Cominiello, former Eastern/Genuardi's Division President has announced his retirement from Safeway. His successor has yet to be named.
• Sheetal Khanna has been appointed Director Brand Management, Premium at Consumer Brands where she will be responsible for Safeway Select, Mom to Mom and Primo Taglio.
• Linda Pollack has been appointed Director Brand Management, Core at Consumer Brands where she will be responsible for the S-Brand and Tactical Value Brands.
• Amanda Steele has been appointed Director Brand Management, Health & Wellness at Consumer Brands.
• Christy Dobbs has been appointed Director Brand Management, Lucerne at Consumer Brands.
• John Kaleel, VP Marketing Operations, will be assuming the responsibility for Supply Chain Strategies Team.
• Crystal Hedgpeth has been appointed to the position of Regional Director, Bakery Department Eastern Division here at the Pleasanton Corporate Office.
• Kerri Daley has been appointed to the position of Regional Director for the Corporate Bakery Department.
• Katie O'Connor has been appointed to the position of Director, Category Development Consumer Brands supporting HCGM/FC.
• Jim Connolly has been appointed to the position of Director, Category Development Consumer Brands supporting BSAT.
• Stuart Arnott has been appointed to the position of Director, Category Development Consumer Brands.
• Scott Cooper, former Category Manager for Laundry has been transferred to Eggs/Cheese.
• Lee Ann Pelkey has been promoted to NCA on Eggs/Cheese
• Rosa McAlister, former Category Manager for Eggs/Cheese has been transferred to Milk.
• Trung Vuong, former NCA on Skin Care has been promoted to Category Manager for Personal Care.
• Amy Ramos has joined the OTC team as the new Category Manager for Upper Respiratory, Smoking Cessation and Trial Size.
• Michael Schweizer has moved from the OTC team as Category Manager to the Home Care team to work on the Pet Care desk.

Food Industry News:

Fresh & Easy to Open 9 Stores in California
Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market plans to open 9 California stores in September, one of which will be its 100th store in the state. The 9 locations will open on three separate days in the following cities: September 8 - Sylmar, Rosemead, Oxnard and Signal Hill; September 15 - Fresno and Clovis; September 22 - San Diego and Oceanside. Poll: Consumers are still focused on savings
A Harris poll indicates that increasing numbers of Americans are buying generic brands and bringing lunch to work to save money, with increases since February in both categories. The poll also found 39% using refillable water bottles instead of buying bottled water, and 22% giving up morning coffee purchases. (Progressive Grocer 7/28)
